Eight Elements of Thought and Reasoning

There are eight elements of thought in reasoning. We often use more than one element at the same time. For example, your Point of View includes Assumptions. Therefore, we can assume that these elements are two aspects of the same thing.

For your assignment this week, first begin by analyzing eight elements of thought and reasoning and re-organize them into four distinct categories by pairing elements together.

Next, briefly describe each new category you created and present your reasoning for each category. Include the characteristics of the original eight elements in your descriptions and the reasoning behind your pairings

• According to me the four categories could be deductive ,inductive ,abductive or inference and analogical .

• Also,the eight elements of thought and reasoning are part of the Critical Thinking model. They are listed as follows:

  2. Assumptions
  3. Implications and consequences
  4. Point of View
  5. Interpretations
  6. Concepts
  7. Purpose
  8. Question

• The elements are paired together into categories by putting the identical elements into pairs. The four categories are as follows:
  1. Purpose is paired with Assumption
  2. Question and Concepts are paired together
  3. Information is paired with Point of View
  4. Interpretations and, Implications and Consequences are paired together.

• Purpose indicates a goal or objective which could be based on assumption. For initial project planning assumptions could either be true or based on facts.
• Based upon concepts which indicates and idea based upon which questions can be made for the purpose of reasoning.What concepts will I use to correct the problem?What information do I need to apply to correct the problem?
• Information includes the facts, data evidence, or experiences used to figure things out based upon which people can form point of views. Having information and facts helps to formulate an argument in order to express a point of view and provide reasoning.
• Implications are claims or truths that logically follow from other claims or truths.Implications follow from thoughts.Consequences follow from actions. What are the implications of my proposed solution?If I decide to do/not do “X”, what might happen? What is likely to happen if I did this versus that
