Question

Two metal plates are being joined through the use of a weld rod. The electric current, L, through the weld rod, causes thermal energy generation along the length of the weld rod. At the same tin the weld rod due to the hotness of the weld zone and convected into the surrounding ambient across the eylindrical surface of the rod. Formulate a differential equation which governs the temperature profile in the weld rod. Assume steady state. You do not need to soive the ditferential equation The electrical resistance of a conductor depends on the electrical resistivity, the length of the conductor and the cross-sectional area of the conductor. h = convective heat transfer coefficient (W/m·K) Pe= electrical resistivity, (ohms-m) k thermal conductivity (W/m-K) d diameter of weld rod (m) I- electric current (amps) P/

A current of 10A passes through the electric wire and there is a voltage drop of 8V along the wire. The diameter of the wire is 3mm and the length is 12m. The wire is wrapped with a 1.5-mm-thick cover whose thermal conductivity is k = 0.15 W/m·°C. If the insulated wire is exposed to calm atmospheric air at ?∞ =30°C, determine the temperature at the interface of the wire and the plastic cover.
