A "moving sidewalk" in an airport terminal building moves at a speed of 1.4 m/s and is of length 35.0 m . A woman steps on at one end and walks at a speed 1.7 m/s relative to the moving sidewalk. How much time does she require to walk from one end to the other if she walks opposite to the direction the sidewalk is moving?

Express your answer using two significant figures.

Answer #1

Here ,

speed of sidewalk , vs = 1.4 m/s

length , L =35 m

speed of the woman , vw = -1.7 m/s

speed of woman realtive to ground = vw + vs

speed of woman realtive to ground = | 1.4 - 1.7 |

speed of woman realtive to ground = 0.3 m/s

time taken = distance/speed of woman realtive to ground

time taken = 35/.3

time taken = 116.7 s

the time taken for her to walk across the sidewalk is 116.7 s
