Question

Mass and energy balances problem

A tank holds 200 gal of a water salt solution in which 5.0 lb of salt is dissolved. Water runs into the tank at the rate 5 gal/min and salt solution overflows at the same rate. If the mixing in the tank is adequate to keep the concentration of salt in the tank uniform at all timetimes, how much salt is in the tank at the end of 100 min? Assume that the density of the salt solution is essentially the same as that of water.

Use Laplace transforms to solve the problems in Exercise. A 500-gal tank contains 200 gal fresh water. A saltwater water solution enters the tank at a rate of 4 gal/min and the well-stirred solution leaves the tank at the same rate. Suppose for the first 10 min the salt concentration of the solution entering the tank is 1/2 Ib/gal and then the salt concentration of the entering solution is reduced to 1/4 Iblgal.
