1.Understanding the nature of their unconscious allows the client to confront the source of their anxiety.

The principles of psychoanalysis stem from the premise that unconscious conflicts form the root of psychological issues, psychoanalysis suggests symptoms can be reduced by bringing these conflicts into conscious awareness.

2.Ask a series of questions designed to get clients in tune with their unconscious.

In free association, the client is given cues ( pictures, words,questions) and are asked to speak freely about whatever that comes first to their mind.The therapist then analysis the clients words.

3.The true meaning of a dream is largely hidden by symbolic imagery.

According to psychoanalytic theory, dreams represent wish fulfillment, unconscious desires, and conflicts. Dreams contain both manifest and latent content. Manifest content includes information from the dream as the client reports or remembers it. Latent content represents the repressed, symbolic meaning embedded within the dream. During dream analysis, the client shares the manifest content of the dream with the therapist. After specific symbols are pulled from the manifest content, the therapist utilizes free association to facilitate the exploration of repressed material.

4.It is an attempt by clients to avoid difficulty of acknowledging and confronting their unconscious desires.

Resistance is holding a mental block against remembering or accepting some events or ideas and it's quite common among clients to show this.

5.Treat therapist like father or mother.

After several sessions of therapy, the client may tend to show transference towards the therapist. This is unwittingly transferring feelings about one person to become applied to another person. If the therapist feels about client it's termed as counter transference. Both of which are are encouraged.
