Answer #1

Here the given files are entry1 and entry3 with current permissions set to -rwxrwxrwx.

The picture below shows that the files entry1 and entry3 have the permissions set to -rwxrwxrwx.

P.S.: entry1 is actually a directory and therefore it has permissions drwxrwxrwx and entry3 is a file and therefore has permissions -rwxrwxrwx.

[root@localhost ~]# ls -ι total 4 rwxrwxrwx2 root 1 root 37 Feb 20 00:26 entryl 0 Feb 20 00:26 entry3 root root

To change the permissions of the file entry1 to dr--r-xrwx, the following symbolic permissions are supplied to the chmod command,

chmod u-wx entry1

chmod g-w entry1

The executed commands have been shown in the picture below along with the changed permissions:

[root@localhos t ~]# chmod [root@localhost ~]# chmod [root@localhost ~]# ls -i total 4 dr--r-xrwx2 root rwxrwxrwx1 root u-wx

To change the permissions of the file entry3 to -rw--w---x, the following symbolic permissions are supplied to the chmod command,

chmod u-x entry3

chmod g-rx entry3

chmod o-rw entry3

The executed commands have been shown in the picture below along with the changed permissions:

[root@localhost ~]# chmod [root@localhost ~]# chmod [root@localhost ~]# chmod [root@localhost ~]# ls -ı total 4 dr-r-xrwx 2 r

Therefore, the above symbolic commands supplied to chmod will get the required work done.

Explanation:

Consider the following example,

2 root root 37 Feb 20 00:26 entryl

In the above example, the first letter d states that the file is a directory. The three consecutive letters after d state the permissions for the user, the next three letters state the permissions for the group and the next three letters after state the permissions for others.

r - read permission

w - write permission

x - execute permission

The two following names root and root state that the file belongs to the user root and the file's group root respectively.

To change the permissions using the symbolic permissions supplied to chmod command, one can use the combination of the below keywords,

u - stands for user

g - stands for group

o - stands for others

a - stands for all

+ to set this permission

- to remove this permissions

= to set exactly this permission

Hence, for example, chmod u-wx entry1 removes the user permissions for write and execute for file entry1.
