Answer #1

1. In greek era, around 400 AD, Democritus introduced the concept of atom and stated that all matter is made up of atoms.

2. In 1704, Newton stated that the atoms are continuously in motion and the atoms are small solid masses.

3. In 1803, Dalton proposed the shape and state of an atom. According to his atomic theory, the atom are spherical solids having some masses.

4. In 1832, Faraday coined the term electrolysis and studied the effect of electricity on solutions. He said that electrolysis is splitting of molecules with electricity.

5. In 1869, Mendellev gave a periodic table in which he arranged all the known elements in different groups based on their atomic weights.

6. In 1894, Stoney proposed that the electricity is composed of electrons which are negatively charged. So, he gave the idea of electrons and their charge.

7. In 1895, Roentgen found X-rays. These rays were very much penetrating and were not deflected by magnetic field.

8. In 1897, J.J. Thomson used cathode ray tube to find the charge to mass ratio of an electron. This led to more understanding of structure of an electron and its properties.

9. In 1898, Rutherford found alpha and beta rays coming from uranium and thorium

10. In 1898, Curie coined radioactivity term as decay process of elements.

11. In 1900, Planck gave the idea of quanta, i.e. discrete units of energy. He also gave quantum theory later on. This theory tells about the energy and structure of an atom.

12. In 1903, Nagaoka created the Saturnian model of an atom. This model says that the flat rings of electrons are revolving around the positively charged particle. This kind of gave clear image of structure of an atom with electrons and protons.

13. In 1905, Einstein gave equation of E = mc2.

14. In 1909, Millikan determined the charge and mass of an electron by oil drop experiment.

15. In 1911, Rutherford established that nucleus is positively charged and is very dense and small. All the electrons are around the nucleus. The concept of nucleus was introduced here.

16. In 1914, Moseley told that the atomic number of an element is equal to its number of protons in nucleus. So, now periodic table was recreated on the basis of the atomic number of elements and not their masses.

17. In 1922, Bohr gave an explanation for trends and similarities of the elements in the periodic table based on the atomic number.

18. In 1923, De broglie discovered that elelctrons have dual nature, i.e. particle and wave.

19. In 1927, Heisenberg stated that the position and velocity of the particle can not be determined at a time.

20. In 1930, Schrodinger introduced wave mechanics for the atoms.

21. In 1932, Chadwick discovered neutrons.
