We can use following equation for calculating initial volume

M1 x V1 = M2 x V2

Rearranging above equation for V1 we get,

V1 = (M2 x V2) / M1

= (0.257 M x 50 mL) / 3 M

= 4.28 mL

Therefore volume required will be 4.28 mL
