Answer #1

let v1 and v2 are the speeds of m1 and m2 after they move they from each other.

Apply conservation of momentum

m1*v1 = m2*v2

0.5*v1 = 0.90*v2

V1 = 1.8 v2

Apply conservation of energy

initial mechanical energy = final mechanical energy

(1/2)*k*x^2 = (1/2)*m1*v1^2 + (1/2)*m2*v2^2

(1/2)*300*0.096^2 = (1/2)*0.5*v1^2 + (1/2)*0.90*v2^2

2.7648 = 0.5 v1^2 + 0.9 v2^2

on solving the above two equations we get

v1 = 1.885 m/s
v2 = 1.047 m/s

In figure m2 is towards right in +x direction
the answers are
v1 = -1.885 m/s
v2 = 1.046 m/s
