Question

Two objects of masses m1-0.44 kg and m2 0.86 kg are placed on a horizontal frictionless surface and a compressed spring of force constant k . 300 N/m is placed between them as in figure (a). Neglect the mass of the spring. The spring is not attached to either object and is compressed a distance of 9.6 cm. If the objects are released from rest, find the final velocity of each object as shown in figure (b). (Let the positive direction be to the right. Indicate the direction with the sign of your answer.) 2.03 Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Answer #1

if v andv2 are the velocities of the two blocks then using law of conservation of momenum Thus va-mi หุ้ using law of conserv

plugging in the values, m1=0.44kg, k=300N/m, m2=0.86kg,x=0.096m, we get

V1=2.04 m/s

v2=m1v1/m2

v2=0.44(2.04)/(0.86)

v2=1.04 m/s
