Looking at the Los Angeles' current Landscape, that is, the freeways and the strip malls. Majority of the parking lots being crowded. Moreover, there is a lack of widespread rail transit infrastructure. Especially in comparison with other crowded American cities.

When the Huntington's huge holdings got developed, maintenance of the rail system crumbled. Services got cut and no maintenance. Trains were now sharing the right to commute with the increasing amount of automobiles. Eventually trains became highly unpredictable and hence unreliable.

As automobiles got more and more famous, authorities thought that the future will be in freeways and not in the transits. Hence, now we see the modern LA.

But maybe it can yet change. Interchange scholar and blogger Gordon Price mentions about an inherited form of streetcar in LA. The part of city which grew off the streetcar lines, retain quite a walk able character, which possibly could be revived easily to be used as launch points for a new rail or a bus rapid transit system.
