In fractional distillation, sometimes, after all of the first liquid (liquid with a lower boiling point) has been collected, a small dip in temperature is observed before the temperature begins to rise again. Rationalize this observation.

Answer #1

Solution:

In a fractional distillation, when lower boiling liquid is "distilling off," the temperature at the head remains equal to the boiling point

of that boiling liquid, therefore, the temperature of the pot is also constant. After the complete collection of first liquid, the pot

temperature increases until the next compound begins to boil off. During this period of time, vapors do not reach the

thermometer and the temperature drops slightly. When a second compound starts to boil, its vapor will reach the head of the

thermometer again, and the temperature will further begins to rise again.
