Procedure-Simple Distillation
1. Take 60 ml of a 50:50 mixture of cyclohexane and toluene and place in a round bottom flask.
Make sure you add a few boiling chips.
2. Assemble the distillation apparatus (See Figure 2.) and start the water flowing through the
condenser. Place a graduated cylinder under the bent adapter so that you can measure the
volume of distillate you collect.
3. Begin heating the sample with a heating mantle until it begins to boil. Once distillate begins
collecting, adjust the heating so that you are getting about 1 drop per second.
4. Record the temperature of the vapor at 5 ml intervals as you collect the distillate.
5. Continue distilling until 50 ml of distillate has been collected. DO NOT BOIL UNTIL DRY!!!!
6. Dispose of the pot residue in the non-halogenated waste container.
7. Plot your data using Excel.

Procedure-Fractional Distillation
1. Take 60 ml of a 50:50 mixture of cyclohexane and toluene and place in a round bottom flask.
Make sure you add a few boiling chips.
2. Assemble the distillation apparatus (See Figure 3.) and start the water flowing through the
condenser. Place a graduated cylinder under the bent adapter so that you can measure the
volume of distillate you collect.
3. Begin heating the sample with a heating mantle until it begins to boil. Once distillate begins
collecting, adjust the heating so that you are getting about 1 drop per second. This procedure will
take much more time than the simple distillation

Answer #1

1. 60mL of 50:50 mixture of cyclohexane and toluene is taken and placed in a round bottom flask.

2. Distillation apparatus was setted up and the water flow was started through the condenser.

A graduated cylinder was placed under the bent adapter to measure the volume of distillate collected.

3. The sample was boiled using the heating mantle. The heating was adjusted in such a way that a drop by drop distillate collects.

4. During the collection of distillate the temperatures of the vapor was recorded at each 5mL intervals of collection.

5. The boiling was continued until 50mL distillate is obtained. The sample was not allowed to dry.

6. The pot residue was disposed into a non-halogenated waste container.

7. The data was plotted using Excel.

This is the required procedure in past tense.
