A car with two people in it ( mass 1000kg) is parked 10.0m from edge of cliff. A person ties a rope to the car's bumper and a 50 kg rock to the other end of the rope. He lowers the rock over the edge of the cliff and the car which is in neutral accelerates toward the edge. Determine the acceleration of the car towards the edge and how long to the people in the car have to jump out before the car goes over the edge?

Answer #1

for rope

m*g - T = m*a

T = mg - ma

for car

T = M*a

mg - ma = M*a

(50*9.8) - (50*a) = 1000*a

acceleration = a = 0.47 m/s^2

distance = x = 10 m

x = ut + 0.5*a*t^2

10 = 0 + (0.5*0.47*t^2

t = 6.53 s

    A 75 kg climber finds himself dangling over the edge of an ice cliff, as shown in the figure below. Fortunately, he's roped to a 940 kg rock located 51 m from the edge of the cliff. Assume that the coefficient of kinetic friction between rock and ice is 5.4×10−2. What is his acceleration, and how much time does he have before the rock goes over the edge? Neglect the rope's mass. This problem is taken from Ahlborn's Zoological Physics, P 5.2. Two young people jump down from a height of h = 2.0 m onto the forest floor which has a mud hole and a rocky flat. The boy (M = 70 kg) lands with stiff legs on the muddy ground, which "gives" so that he depresses the ground by Delta_y = 5 cm when being decelerated from the impact velocity U_0 to 0. Determine the impact speed U_0. Calculate the...
