Answer #1

The leaves of these trees are adapted as needles so that the tree can survive in colder climate. Each branch in the tree gets divided into needle shaped leaves which conserves water. These needle like leaves protects the vascular tissue of the central vein of the leaves by being tightly packed.

In the needle-like leaves, Photosynthesis occurs in the mesophyll cells which are protected by a waxy cuticle and sclerenchyma. These mesophyll cells are located outside a sheath. This sheath protects the central vein.

Needles possess tight stomal closures thus creating reduced air movement inside the needles subsequently reducing the water betting vaporised in the winters. While in the summer, the dark colour of the needles absorb heat to enhance water vapour to prevent undue water retention.
