while writing the oxidation and reduction equations we use the oxidation states of the element to determine if its undergoing oxidation or reduction.

Unbalanced equation

Mn3+(aq)→MnO2(s)+Mn2+(aq)

in this equation Mn is the element which undergoing oxidation and reduction simultaneously

Writing half equations

Mn3+(aq)   ----- > MnO2 (s)                oxidation

Mn3+ (aq)   ----- > Mn2+ (aq)               reduction

So the unbalanced oxidation equation is as follows

Mn3+(aq)   ----- > MnO2 (s)                oxidation
