Question

Transportation Systems 1

1.       A simple circular curve exists with a degree of curve D = 10, and  e= 0.10. A structure is proposed on land on the inside of curve. Assume the road is on level grade. Determine:

(a) The radius of the curve

(b) The current maximum safe speed of the curve

(c) The minimum distance allowable between the proposed structure and the centerline of the curve such that the current maximum safe speed of the curve would not need to be reduced

NUMBER 8 ONLY 7. You are asked to design a horizontal curve with a 40-degree central angle for a two-lane road with 10-ft lanes. The design speed is 70mph, superelevation is 6%, and the coefficient of friction is 0.10. Determine the radius, degree of curvature, and the curve length. [8 points] 8. For the horizontal curve in the above problem, what distance must be cleared from the inside edge of the inside lane to provide adequate stopping distance? [6 points]

    9. When designing winding roads through the country-side, civil engineers need to take into consideration the maximum safe sideways acceleration (centripetal acceleration from friction) for rounding a turn is ac 1 m/s2. What is the minimum radius of the curve in the road if the maximum speed is 45 mph? (Ans: 404.7 m)

The Big-I in Albuquerque, NM has an exit ramp that takes southbound traffic eastwards. The ramp is a circular arc of radius 56.5 m, and banked at 32o. The posted speed is 45 mph, which allows a car to neither slide up nor down the incline. Show how to determine the coefficient of friction (kinetic or static?) between the road and the car tires.
