Answer #1

Oxidation of alcohols using CrO42- or chromate

Jones'reagent=chromic acid(H2CrO4 in acidic medium +acetone) is generally used for oxidation of alcohols to their corresponding carbonyl compounds.

Secondary alcohols are converted to ketones, but primary alcohols are oxidized to their corresponding carboxylic acids

The orange color of CrO42- ion fades to give green color of Cr3+ in the process, so the oxidation is visually detectable

1) Ethanol

color change:orange to green

condensed structural formula: CH3CH2OH

Classification: primary alcohol

oxidation product:CH3COOH (acetic acid)

2)2-propanol

color change:orange to green

condensed structural formula: CH3CH(OH)CH3

Classification: secondary alcohol

oxidation product:CH3COCH3 (acetone)

3)t-Butyl alcohol

color change: no color change

condensed structural formula: (CH3)3C-OH

Classification: tertiary alcohol

oxidation product: no rxn

4)Cyclohehanol

color change:orange to green

condensed structural formula: see in the image

Classification: seondary alcohol

oxidation product: cyclohexanone(see in the image)
