rad stands for radiation absorbed dosage. This is a unit which is used to express absorption of ionizing radiation into any medium ( primarily tissue in case of human body)

rem stands for roentgen equivalent man. This helps in establishing the relation between dose of any radiation and the biological effect of that radiation.

To apply an idea in real life, we must know the working principle behind that idea. Then we must look at the way things work to evaluate that idea and if anything seems suspicious, we must go back and understand the principle in a much better way.

An example would be applying Newton's law of motion in daily life like moving in a bus, applying a force.
