Due to dispersion, the image of the stars and planet appears to be fuzzy as the violet light and red light comes from different points due to the dispersion of the white light as it passes through the atmosphere.

This can be rectified by keeping the telescope such that the Slit of the spectrograph crosses the star or planet vertically i.e. perpendicular to the horizon. This minimizes the relative shift of the spectral lines.
