A shipment of 1000 small lab mice arrives at the animal care facility with a nominal weight of 10 g per mouse. A sample of 20 mice is selected and weighed. The average weight of the sample is 9.8g From past shipments, it is known that the standard deviation of weight among mice with a nominal weight of 10 g is 2 g. The technician wishes to test the hypothesis that the average weight of the mice matches the nominal value versus that the mice are underweight. What is the appropriate alternative hypothesis a researcher would have to use if they chose to do an experiment that addresses this? In this question, if you had to actually conduct a hypothesis test, would you be using techniques learned in Chapter 14/15 or in Chapter 17 of our text? How can you tell? 6 If you were to carry through with conducting a hypothesis, what additional piece of information would you need?
