Answer #1

Critical values: for all of the above we will use tn-1 scores since n is small

7. This is one sided test, so critical value is at t 0.01,29 = 2.462

8. Again one sided, so t0.05, 8 = 1.86

9. This is two sided, so t0.005,34= 2.728

10. This is one sided, so t0.05,23= 1.714

11. For this one sided test, critical values are found from the chi square table, 2.088 and 21.67

Testing the claim about mean:

Test statistic: 32-30/5/√25 = 2

This is a one sided test, so critical value is at t0.05,24 = 1.711

Null hypothesis: H0: u<= 30

Alternative hypothesis is Ha: u>30

Since our test statistic is greater than the critical value we have sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis.

Confidence intervals:

1. Here since population standard deviation is unknown, t score will be used,

So 95% confidence interval for u is given as:

100 +- t0.025,24*5/√25

= 100+- 2.064

= (97.936, 102.064)

2. 90% confidence interval for p is given as:

X/n +- 1.645*√(x/n)(1-x/n)/n

= 0.4 +- 1.645*√0.4*0.6/100

= (0.3194, 0.4806)

3. 95% confidence interval for sigma is given as,

√(n-1)*s^2/39.36 , √(n-1)*s^2/12.4

= (1.562, 2.782)

When σ is unknown and the sample is of size n ≥ 30, there are two methods for computing confidence intervals for μ. Method 1: Use the Student's t distribution with d.f. = n − 1. This is the method used in the text. It is widely employed in statistical studies. Also, most statistical software packages use this method. Method 2: When n ≥ 30, use the sample standard deviation s as an estimate for σ, and then use the...

A large candy manufacturer in Slidell produces, packages, and sells packs of candy targeted to weigh 500 grams. The weight of a pack of candy is normally distributed with the mean μ=500 grams, but Parker Sanderson, a quality control manager working for the company, was concerned that the variation in the actual weights of the targeted 500-gram packs was larger than acceptable. That is, he was concerned that some packs weighed significantly less than 500-grams and some weighed significantly more...
