Thirty undergraduate students were recruited for a research project in a psychology class. The students were randomly assigned to two different groups: Group A saw a moving fictional movie dealing with the death of a young man in battle. Group B saw a documentary on the war in Iraq, including the numbers of soldier killed or wounded. Empathy was then measured with the Interpersonal Empathy Test which had 25 questions scaled from 1 to 4. Thus test scores could range from 25 to 100. The researchers wanted to determine whether there was a difference in empathy between those students who saw a moving fictional account of a death; and those students who got reality-based information. The empathy scores are below: Group A: 67 98 68 77 82 77 69 80 84 92 77 87 84 72 79 Group B: 48 69 82 55 59 52 49 75 78 66 48 57 61 59 70 Use SPSS to analyze the data. Use the t test for independent groups. What did you learn from the test? Write in words what the results of the t test means. Report the mean empathy score for each group, the standard deviation for each group, the value of t and the p value. The correct way to report a t test is as follows: t(value for degrees of freedom)=value of t, p=value attained. Attach an output file to the discussion showing the results of your t test. Since the p-value (0.000) is less than the significance level (0.05), we can reject the null hypothesis.

Therefore, we can conclude that there was a difference in empathy between those students who saw a moving fictional account of death; and those students who got reality-based information.
