Answer #1

Proline and Glycine have poor propensities to form alpha helix. Proline either breaks the helix or introduces a kink in the helix because it cannot donate an amide hydrogen bond (having no amide hydrogen), and also because its sidechain interferes sterically with the backbone of the preceding turn - inside a helix, this forces a bend of about 30° in the helix axis. On the other hand Glycine is conformationally very flexible because of its small size and hence its introduction in the alpha helix is unfavourable.

There are four amino acid residues between each turn of an alpha helix, because O hydrogen bonding between the carbonyl and amine groups is more stable at this distance. O amino acid residues need a certain amount of distance between then during the turn. O the polar amino acids are more attractive to the peptide bond at this distance. O None of the choices are correct.
