What is the solubility of AgCl in pure water at 25°C? The Ksp of AgCl is...

What is the solubility of AgCl in pure water at
25°C? The Ksp of AgCl is 1.8x10^-10.

9.0 x 10^-11

1.3 x 10^-5

1.8 x 10^-3

3.6 x 10^-10

What is the solubility of AgCl in 10 M NH3? The Kf of Ag(NH3)2+ from AgCl(s) in aqueous NH3 is 0.0031, which is for the balanced reaction shown below.

AgCl(s) + 2 NH3(aq) → Ag(NH3)2+(aq) + Cl-(aq)

Kf = 0.0031

0.176 M

0.426 M

0.023 M

0.557 M

Answer #1

AgCl --------> Ag+ + Cl-
Ksp = [Ag+][Cl-] = 1.8 x 10-10
The molar solubility of AgCl = [Ag+]

in pure water
Let [Ag+] = x. Then [Cl-] = x, and substituting in the Ksp expression we have
(x)(x) = 1.8 x 10-10
x2 =1.8 x 10-10
x = 1.342 x 10-5 moles dm-3 = molar solubility of AgCl
Molar mass of AgCl is 143.321 g /mol
solubility = 143.32 g / mol x 1.342 x 10-5 moles dm-3
= 1.8 x 10-3 gdm-3
