Question

(entropy) da compare Lets say we have 4 small interacting systems. Ive already calculated the number of microstates for each independent system which are as follows; 21 x 105, S2 3 x 106, S3 5 x 105, and 24 x 106 a) When the 4 systems are interacting what is the total number of states (microstates, S2) accessible? b) What are S1, S2, S, and S4 (entropy of each system independently) in terms of Boltzmanns constant, k? Compute the entropy of the combined system (ST) two ways (again in units of Boltzmanns onstant): 1) By using the answer to part a) 2) By using the answer to part b).

Answer #1

a] Total number of microstates accessible = \Omega_{total} = \Omega_{1} \Omega_{2} \Omega_{3} \Omega_{4}

substitute the individual values and find their product.

b] Entropy of the individual system will be:

\\ S_1 = kln\Omega_{1} \\S_2 = kln\Omega_{2} \\ S_3 = kln\Omega_{3} \\S_4 = kln \Omega_{4}

substitute the values from above and k = 1.38 x 10-23 J/K to get S.

c]

1] Use S_{total} = k ln\Omega _{total} to get the total entropy.

2] Use S_{total} = S_1 + S_2 + S_3 + S_4 to get total entropy.

    This C++ Program consists of: operator overloading, as well as experience with managing dynamic memory allocation inside a class. Task One common limitation of programming languages is that the built-in types are limited to smaller finite ranges of storage. For instance, the built-in int type in C++ is 4 bytes in most systems today, allowing for about 4 billion different numbers. The regular int splits this range between positive and negative numbers, but even an unsigned int (assuming 4 bytes)...

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
