The cytoplasm of most cells is buffered by the combination of bicarbonate (HCO3-, the weak acid) and carbonate (CO32-, the conjugate base) ions that buffer the cell at a pH of around 7.8. Would you expect the presence of other ions that are normally present in the cell (other than H+) have any effect on the ability of carbonate and bicarbonate ions to buffer the cell? Explain your answer.
