Bicarbonate (HCO3-) is a common water quality constituent. Bicarbonate dissociates as a weak acid to give carbonate (CO32-) as follows:

HCO3- = CO32- + H+ pKa = 10.33

Determine whether HCO3-, or CO32-, is predominant in natural waters at pH = 7.90.

I got (HCO_3)^- ; I would just like to double check!

Answer #1

When Camban dioxide react with water to produce weak acid Carbonic acid CH₂CO3). which feather dissociates to give becoabonatis geophanged as blows the above epuakion Ka - [co 2- [H] [hcoj] pH = 7.90 = -log [ht] [++] = 107.90 [H+] = 1,253 x1024 pka =The ratio of [co2m] / [420 7 = 0.0037 which show that [Heog] = 1 and [CO32- ] = 0.0037. : HCO is predominant in natural teate

HCO3- is predominant in natural waters at pH = 7.90

The ratio of [CO32-]/[HCO3-] is 3.7/1000

The cytoplasm of most cells is buffered by the combination of bicarbonate (HCO3-, the weak acid) and carbonate (CO32-, the conjugate base) ions that buffer the cell at a pH of around 7.8. Would you expect the presence of other ions that are normally present in the cell (other than H+) have any effect on the ability of carbonate and bicarbonate ions to buffer the cell? Explain your answer.

I would assume that I would have to boil the water again...but...

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
