According to first law of thermodynamics:

dU=q+w

dU : change in internal energy

q: heat

w: work

Heat is absorbed by the system therefore for q is positive q=12.4J

Work is done by the system on the surroundings therefore work is is negative

w=-4.2J

Putting the values of of heat and work we can get the value of change in internal energy

dU = q+w

dU = 12.4J - 4.2J

dU = 8.2J
