Nitroge fixation is the process by which atmospheric nitrogen is converted to Ammonia. Nitrogen is very essential for the synthesis of various biomolecules like amino acids and nucleic acids in all organisms. Animals obtain required nitrogen from plants. Plants cannot utilise the nitrogen present in the air directly. Hence have to obtain in some other form.
Hence nitrogen is fixed and made available to the plants by some symbiotic bacteria.
Bacteria like Azospirillum, rhizobium etc. are able to fix nitrogen.
Bacteria use Nitrogen gas from the atmosphere. They reduce it to Ammonia by addition of hydrogen. This process is carried out by an enzyme called nitrogenase in the presence of a Iron-Molybdenum cofactor.
