Schistosomes are important human and animal parasites throughout Africa, Asia and South America, predominantly in rural areas. The three Schistosoma species that are medically relevant are S. japonicum, S. haematobium and S.mansoni. Schistosomiasis (or bilharziasis) is unusual amongst helminth diseases for two reasons:
S. japonicum
Species | Definite host | Site of infection | Egg excretion | Endemic Area | Worm morphology | Egg Morphology |
S.Japonicum | Humans, Ruminants, Carnivores | Intestinal mesenteric veins | Faeces | China,East Asia, |
Color: Yellow or Yellow brown. measure approx:2cm by 0.5mm Females are larger than males |
round eggs (70-100 x 50-70µm) with a rudimentary lateral spine |
S. haematobium | Humans, Primates | veins of Urogenital system | Urine | Africa,Middle east |
Mostly red, can be dark grey in color. oval eggs (110-170 x 40-70µm) with a sharp terminal spine. |
|
S.mansoni | Humans, Rodents | Intestinal mesenteric veins | Faeces | Africa, South America, Caribbean, Middle East |
Color: males are white and females are grey measure approx 1cm by 0.015 |
oval eggs (115-175 x 45-7µm) with a sharp lateral spine |
distinguish between the three Schistosoma species that most commonly parasitize humans using both structural and clinical...
Using a bidentate ligand of your choice, explain using structural diagrams, how you could distinguish between the isomeric square planar complexes cisdiaquadibromidonickel(II) and trans-diaquadibromidonickel(II)
A) Distinguish between the cyst and the trophozoite form of a protozoan. B) Name one species that is classified as an apicomplexan and the disease that it causes. C) Name one species that is classified as a flagellate and the disease that it causes. 9. Name three different modes of transmission used by parasitic worms. Give an example of each.
Genetic differences between closely related species are due to changes at both synonymous and nonsynonymous sites (there can also be structural changes, including insertions and deletions, but disregard those for the moment). Do you expect the fraction of total differences at synonymous sites to be greater among elephant species or among nematode species? Explain your answer.
There are a few structural differences between THG and testosterone On the figure for THG below, carefully circle and label the functional groups and substituents that differ from testosterone. Further analysis of this drug, suggested that THG has very strong anabolic effects on humans. Give one typical effect of anabolic steroids on humans. The androgen receptor is located in the cell's nucleus. Testosterone (and other anabolic steroids) can/cannot (circle one) readily pass through both the cell and the nuclear membrane....
Please answer all the 7 questions for me. Thank you so much for your help. 1. What are a biological species? What is speciation? Discuss the relationship between species and speciation. 2. Define a biological population. Why are populations described as dynamic? Provide three examples of properties of a population that can change over time. 3. Which is the most accurate way to determine population size? Describe two different methods for estimating population size. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of...
Mutations in the CFTR gene result in
cystic fibrosis in humans, a condition in which abnormal secretions
are present in the lungs, pancreas, and sweat glands. In the effort
to positionally clone the CFTR gene, the gene was mapped to a
region of 500 kb on chromosome 7 containing three candidate genes.
Using your knowledge of the disease symptoms, how would you
distinguish between the candidate genes to decide which is most
likely to encode the CFTR gene?
TASK 2 2.1 Distinguish between any three (3) differences Absorption and Marginal Costing using the template below: (E3:3.1) (1.5 MARKS X 6 = 9 MARKS) ABSORPTION COSTING MARGINAL COSTING 1. 2. 2. 3.
Draw the perovskite structure using the chemical formula for the materials by far most commonly associated with the perovskite structure. (Caution: Use proper size ratio between the elements in your sketch) !!!Prove that the total electrostatic bond strength of the bonds reaching an anion from all the surrounding cations should be equal to the charge of the anion in this perovskite structure according to Pauling’s second rule!!!
please discuss in detail using facts data and examples
Distinguish between explicit and implicit costs, giving examples of each. What are some explicit and implicit costs of attending college? Distinguish between accounting profit, economic proft, and normal pront. Does accounting profit or economic profit determine how entrepreneurs allocate resources between different business ventures? Explain.. List several fixed and variable costs associated with owning and operating an automobile. Suppose you are considering whether to drive your car or fly about 770...
