Question

15. A gas tank has a length of 5 ft, inner radius of 24 in, and a thickness of 0.5 in. The tank is subjected to loads of N 1.5x106 Ibf, V 1.0x106 lbf, and an internal pressure of 1.5 ksi. The tank is made of Annealed 4130 Steel with a yield and ultimate tensile strength of 52 and 81 ksi respectively. (a) Determine the state of stress at point A which is located at half the length of the cylinder. (b) Using Von Mises stress, determine the factor of safety for yielding and the factor of safety for failure.

Problems 1. (Subtotal: 21 points) A steady torque of 1500 Ibf in is transmitted by a machined shaft made of steel with an ultimate tensile strength of 100 kpsi. The transverse cross section at the location of a shoulder against which a gear sits is subjected to a bending moment which is a sinusoidal function of time with a maximum of 800 lbf-in. Furthermore, this cross section is the location for the maximum von Mises stress. The smaller diameter at...

2.) A large spherical tank contains gas at a pressure of 420 psi. The tank is 45 ft in diameter and is constructed of high strength steel having a yield stress in tension of 80 ksi. Determine the required thickness (to the nearest 4 inch) of the wall of the tank if a factor of safety of 3.5 with respect to yielding is required. Next, if the tank thickness is 2.25 in., what is the maximum internal pressure. (Problem 8.2-3)
