M31, the great galaxy in Andromeda and a member of the Local Group of galaxies, is approaching us. Does this mean that Hubble's law is wrong? If not, then why would M31 be moving towards us and not away from us? Be sure to DEFINE Hubble's Law as part of your response!!

Hubble's law is a statement of a direct correlation between the distance to a galaxy and its recessional velocity as determined by the red shift. It can be stated as

V= Hr

Here, r is the distance between galaxies, and v is the recessional velocity, H is hubbles constant.

Which states that all galaxies appears to move away from each other.

But at local level gravity is the strongest force. Andromeda is only 2.5 million light years away. Hence by Hubbles law the recessional speed is only 10 Km/s. Gravity is strong such that it overcame this expansion force. That is why Andromeda is moving towards earth.
