An oil company produces a wastewater and would develop an integrated Unit for the biological treatment. You are assigned to overview this project with some engineers available to construct all the steps of the process. The characteristics of the wastewater are the following: Total COD = 35 kg/m3 Soluble COD= 22 kg/m3 Total suspended solids and oil = 18.7 kg/m3 The pre-treated wastewater after the separation of suspended sis characterized by a BOD of 21.5 kg/m3. The engineer obtained 87% BOD removal with the selected technology and the treatment of 1 m3 of wastewater produced 10/m3 biomass. Knowing that the flow rate of the wastewater is 20 m3/d, all treated in one day in a reactor of 50 m3 ( useful volume). Calculate the hydraulic loading rate

1. 25 m3/ m3.d

2. 2.5 m3/ m3.d

3. 4 m3/ m3.d

4. 0.4 m3/m3.d

Answer #1

hydraulic loading rate = (20 m3/d)/ (50 m3)

= 0.4 m3/m3.d

so option 4

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
