When do you think a leader should use a Power or Rights approach instead of an Interest approach to solving problems? What might the tradeoffs be?
A leader has powers to govern things around them and make changes. It is their choice how they work and solve problems around them.
Interest based approach is when a leader makes decisions to solve the problem concerning to all the people who are currently involved or impacted by the situation.
Power based approach is when a leader makes decision to solve a problem by using his powers and authority.
Well, there can be many situations in which a leader must take decision according to what in his power as well as what what rights he have to make decisions. Especially when it comes to the decision which is right for your organisation or company but the people are not with you so when you know what is right for your organization then a leader must use his power to take the right action.
In leadership, Power is not just about getting your work done. It is about when it is right to use the power and make the right decision which will benefit you today as well as in future. Creating big change requires power based approach in decision making as well as problem solving.
In small problems,in which only a particular group of people is affected one might use interest based approach to solve problems, like when problems is between two parties then leader should identify their interest and make the deal that satisfy both. But when the things are big enough to affect the whole company then it is right to solve the problems on right based or power based approach.
For e.g. - Consider if there are big changes happening around and you need to adopt to the higher technology to fight the competition but the advisers around you say that it is a big risk for the company or company will go to loss but you know that if you don't make the decision now then the problem will only increase and not opting the change is the temporary solution so as a leader you have the right to make that decision and you know that it isthe only solution. You must use power based approach.
