Question

た-3.42 P = 0.001 Dead Alive Larval fate

The graph is the result of our data formed by R Studio. I'm confused with the meaning of p and t values.

Our hypothesis: predation drives the size of galls.

Prediction: Higher survival rate of larvae will be found in the smaller galls.

So how can I explain the result (emphasize the meaning of p and t value in the graph)

P-value relates the results obtained from sample data to the null hypothesis.

- A small p-value suggests that our sample data is inconsistent with our hypothesis. i.e The sample data does not support our hypothesis.

- A large p-value suggests that our data is consistent with our hypothesis. i.e The sample data support our hypothesis.

For example. Our hypothesis states that predation drives the size of galls. P-value = 0.001 is small enough to say that our sample data does not suggest the hypothesis and it is safe to reject the hypothesis.

t-value tells us about the deviation of the results (obtained from sample data) from the hypothesis. As the difference between the results obtained from the sample data and the hypothesis increases, the absolute value of the t-value increases. When t-value = 0, we can say that the results from the sample data exactly equals the hypothesis.

Here, t = -3.42 indicates that the sample data is inconsistent with the hypothesis. i.e There is a deviation from the expected results (hypothesis).
