A container of carbon dioxide gas has a volume of 50.0 L. When originally purchased, the tank guage showed a pressure of 10.0 atm at 20.0 degrees celcius. After one month's use, the tank pressure was 6.10 atm at 15.0 degrees celcius. How many grams of CO2 were used during the month? Molar Mass of CO2 is 44.01 g/mol.

Answer #1

volume of CO2 gas = 50.0 L

pressure P1 = 10.0 atm

temperature T1 = 20 oC = 293 K

n = P V / RT

= 10 x 50 / 0.0821 x 293

n1 = 20.78

pressure P2 = 6.10 atm

temperature T2 = 15 oC = 288 K

P V = n R T

6.10 x 50 = n x 0.0821 x 288

n = 12.90

moles of CO2 used = 20.785 - 12.899 = 7.886

mass of CO2 used = 7.886 x 44.01 = 347 g

mass of CO2 used = 347 g
