Answer #1
1 Mass of crucible + cover 22.9383 g
2 Mass of crucible + cover + Mg 23.3509 g
3 Mass of crucible + cover + MgO after second heating 23.4229 g
4 Mass of crucible + cover + MgO after third heating 23.4809 g
5 Mass of crucible + cover + MgO after fourth heating 23.5099 g

Analysis:

1 Mass of Mg 0.4126 g
2 Mass of Mg after second heating (23.4229 - 22.9383) = 0.4846 g
3 Mass of Mg after third heating (23.4809 - 22.9383) = 0.5426 g
4 Mass of oxygen in product after fourth heating (23.5099 - 23.350) = 0.1599 g
5 Mass % of Mg in MgO 72.18%

Calculation for mass percent:

Mass % = (Mass of Mg reacted / Mass of MgO produced) × 100

= (0.4126 g / 0.5716 g) × 100

= 72.18%

In the above calculation mass of MgO produced is taken which is obtained after fourth heating i.e. 23.5099 - 22.9383 = 0.5716 g

As a result of this procedure, anything that was in the crucible at the end of the experiment, along with the magnesium oxide product, would cause an error in the figure that is recorded as "mass of oxygen". Would extra mass it the crucible cause the "mass of oxygen" to come out too high or too low? Explain.
