Simvastatin (marketed under the name Zorcord), is a medicine for high blood cholesterol levels, see structure below. Simvastatin belongs to the group of medicines called statins. Simvastatin acts by blocking an enzyme, HMG-CoA reductase, which is found in the cells where it is used in the cell's cholesterol production. This means that the cells production of cholesterol decreases. The cells then try to compensate for the decreased production by increasing the absorption of cholesterol from the blood. This in turn leads to decreased levels of cholesterol in the blood.
