Ans.43 True , the kidney regulates the concentration of ions, water and pH.Each kidney has nearly one million complex tubular structures called nephrons. Each nephron has two parts - the glomerulus and the renal tubule. The renal tubule consist of proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) helps to maintain the pH and ionic balance of the body fluids by selective secretion of hydrogen ion, ammonia and potassium ion into the filtrate and by absorption of HCO-3 from it. Further Henle's loop plays a significant role in the maintainance of high osmolarity of medullary inerstitial fluid.Distal convoluted tubule (DCT) reabsorb sodium ion and water.Collecting duct allows passage of small amounts of urea into the medullary interstitium to keep up the osmolarity .It also plays a role in the maintenance of pH and ionic balance of blood by the selective secretion of hydrogen ion and potassium ion.
