In a lab, we seperated Excedrin (paracetamol, acetylsalicylic acid, caffeine, and binder). First we dissolved the powder in diethyl ether. This seperated the mixture into caffeine/acetylsalicylc acid and binder/paracetamol. K2HPO4 was added to the caffeine/acetylsalicylic acid. Give the reaction mechanism for K2HPO4 + caffeine and K2HPO4 + acetylsalicylic acid. HCl was then added to K2HPO4 + acetylsalicylic acid. Give this reaction mechanism.

Answer #1

Answer:

K2HPO4 (aq) HPO42(aq) HO-p Addition of K2HPO4 to a mixture of Caffeine and acetylsalicylic acid HO No Reaction caffeine ac etyls alicylate acetylsalicylic acid On addition of K2HPO4 i.e. HPO4to a mixture of Caffeine and Acetylsalicylic acid a moderate base HPO2 abstract carboxylic proton from Acetylsalicylic acid and crresponding cojugate base acetylslicylate goes into aqueous phase Whereas the moderately basic Caffeine wont show any reaction with HPO4 and remains in non-aqueous phase Then carefully two layes are separated and to aqueous layer HCl is added which protonates carboxylate group and give acetylsalicylic acid solid form back Hence the way to achieve Caffeine and acetylsalycylic acid separation O + HCl он Aqueous Phase Acetylsalicylic acid back

Show structure and cleavage of each step. In a lab, we seperated Excedrir (paracetamol, acetylsalicylic acid, caffeine and binder). First we dissolved the powder in diethyl ether. This seperated the mixture into caffeine/acetylsalicylc acid and binder/paracetamol. K2HPO4 was added to the caffeine/acetylsalicylic acid. K2HPO41+ caffeine was washed with 1) NaCl and then dried with 2) anhydrous sodium sulphate. Give the reaction mechanism for 1) and 2)

Okay, so we had solid benzoic acid, ethyl 4- aminobenzoate, and 9-fluorenone all dissolved in diethyl ether (4ml). We separated the basic component by adding 3M HCl, we separated the acidic component by adding 3M NaOH. I don't understand what happens here. To isolate the acidic solution, we added 6 M NaOH and used the vacuum to recover the solid. To isolate the basic solution we added 6M HCl. Here are the questions I am having trouble with... • Why...

An unknown mixture (dissolved in diethyl ether) contains only 2 of the following : benzoic acid, phenol, aniline and napthalene. You use the acid-base extraction method and want to identify the 2 compounds in your original mixture. 1) To separate the organic acid you add NaOH and to separate the organic base you add HCl.In both cases these extractions are followed by extractions with water. Why do we add water? Why is this step important? (A clear explanation please). 2)When...

Organic Chemistry Lab question In the experiment we did acid-base extractions to find impurities. The impurity was either benzoic acid (acid) or 4-chloroaniline (base) So in this experiment we did Acid-Base extraction with an unknown compound. So we had an unknown of 0.150 grams and mixed it with 20 mL of diethyl ether. We placed this in a separatory funnel and added 2mL of 1.0 NaOH solution to the separatory funnel and placed the stopper over the top of the...
