A basement for a certain home is 3.9 m × 4.8 m with a ceiling height of 2.9 m. The walls are made up of cement concrete having a thickness of 9.8 cm. In the winter the convection coefficient on the inside is 10 W/m2 · ◦C and the soil on the outside has thermal conductivity, k =1.7 W/m·◦C.

(i) Perform a critical analysis of the above stated problem and estimate the overall heat transfer coefficient U defined by the equation, qloss = UA inside (Tinside −Tsoil).

(ii) Evaluate the heat loss when inside temperature, Tinside = 25 ◦C and soil temperature, Tsoil = 14 ◦C
