Answer #1

There are a couple of ways to go about this. One way is to sum the moments about one of the people, eliminating the force he exerts. Let’s go another route and sum the moments about one end.

The sum of the forces that Sam and Joe exert must equal the weight of the beam:

Fs + Fj = 490 N, so

Fs = 490N - Fj

Now sum the moments about the left end:

ΣM = 0 = (490N - Fj)*1m - 490N * 7.75m/2 + Fj*5.75m

0 = 490N·m – 1898.75N·m - Fj*1m + Fj*5.75m = -1408.75N·m + Fj*4.75m

Fj = 296.58 N ◄ joe's force

Fs = 490N - Fj = 193.42 N ◄ sam's force
