Depression and being anxious for long time is one common trait of individuals experiencing adjustment disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder and acute stress disorder. The anxiety levels are elevated when they experience their past traumatic event again or come close to the vicinity of such events.

Individuals suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder tend to have an altered flight or run system in life threatening or dangerous situations. They experience unknown fear that immobilizes the thought process as well as the body movements for a few seconds.
Individuals suffering from adjustment disorder experience sadness, hopelessness, etc. They feel depressed for longer duration and all time in a day. Immediate adjustment to any new situation be it happy one or sad one prevails accompanied by depression and mild to severe anxiety.
