You are cycling at a constant speed of 10.0 m/s on a level road.

(a) If the net resistive force acting against you from things like air resistance is 32.0 N, what is your power output as you pedal?

(b) How much additional power is required to maintain this speed up a hill inclined at 3.00° with the horizontal? Assume the combined mass of you and your bicycle is 58.0 kg. If you need a value for the acceleration due to gravity, use g = 9.80 m/s2.

Answer #1

given speed is v = 10 m / s

given force is F = 32 N

a)

the power output P = force X speed

P = F X v

P = 32 X 10

P = 320 watts

2 )

to calculate the additional power

\Theta = 30 and m = 58 kg , g = 9.80 m/s2.

first horizontal force F = mg cos\Theta

F = 58 X 9.8 X cos30

F = 568.4 X 0.998

F = 567.62 N

again using P = F X v

P = 567.62 X 10

P = 5676.2 watts
