Question

What is the balanced equation for valeric acid and tert-amyl alcohol? (including names of compounds). This is part of a fischer esterification lab using a carboxylic acid and alcohol. Also need to find the grams, moles of reactant and molar mass.

Answer #1

The balanced equation for valeric acid and tert-amyl alcohol is shown below -

H2SO4 W hoH + How = + H2O OH valeric acid HO tert-amyl alcohol reflux tert-pentyl pentanoate

Now if we consider valeric acid as a limiting reagent in this reaction, according to the balanced equation mentioned above we will get 1 mole of tert-pentyl pentanoate starting from 1 mole of valeric acid. Now the molar mass of tert-pentyl pentanoate is = 172. g/mol. So 5g of tert-pentyl pentanoate is = ( 5 / 172. ) mol = 0.029024206 mol.

Therefore, to get 5g of tert-pentyl pentanoate, that is, 0.029024206 mol tert-pentyl pentanoate 0.029024206 mol of valeric acid and 0.029024206 mol of tert-amyl alcohol is needed.

Now the molar mass of valeric acid is = 102.13 g/mol. Hence 0.029024206 mol of valeric acid is = ( 0.029024206 \times 102.13 ) g = 2.964242177 g.

And the molar mass of tert-amyl alcohol is = 88.15, so 0.029024206 mol of tert-amyl alcohol is = ( 0.029024206 \times 88.15 ) g = 2.558483775 g.
