Whenever we talk about fire safety thermal radiation is acknowledged as the dominant mode of heat transfer for fires, which determines the growth and spread of a number of fires.

Protection against it is an important issue in fire fighting in order to prevent fire spread, protect building structure and safeguard residents of building in case of fire emergencies

Thermal radiation from a flame is of importance in fire safety because:

a. From flame to burning material the energy transfer is mostly primarily by radiation. It influences the rate of burning.

b. Generally radiative transfer is the reason of spread of a fire to nearby combustibles

c. The time of flashover is calculated by the radiant emission from flames and the hot upper layer of the place.When a place hits flashover, a firefighter in full protective gear, have little distance to escape to avoid injury or death!!

d. Radiation from huge fire turn out to be intense where protection gear of fighters may be inadequate

e. Radiative transfer does not need any mode for transportation it can spread even in vaccum and the speed with which it spreads is equal to the speed of light
