A student carries out a synthesis of ibuprofen and obtains white solid with a melting of point 75-77° matching that reported in the literature of 75-77°C a. Explain why this information does not prove that the material synthesized was ibuprofen. b. Using only the technique of melting point determination, describe who the student could prove that the material they synthesized was ibuprofen.

Answer #1

a)

It is not possible to identify ibuprofen or any pure product by determining its melting point. This is because other products or side products might have the same melting point.

b)
The synthesized Ibuprofen or any compound can be proved by student using only technique of melting point determination. For this confirmation, student would have to add ibuprofen or respective substance to the product and once again determine the melting point. If the melting point of product is unchanged, the product is proved that the synthesized compound is ibuprofen.

    - A student is trying to identify an unknown solid based on its melting point. She noted that the compound began to melt at 182°C and finished melting at 187°C. Knowing it is possible for there to be impurities in the sample, is this compound more likely to be camphor or hydroquinone. Explain your reasoning. A young chemist has synthesized what he believed to be acetaminophen. He measured the melting point of this newly formed compound to be 163-178°C. If...

Acid/Base Extraction Liquid-liquid extraction is a technique that can be used to physically separate two substancesthat have varying solubility properties. Typically an aqueous solution can be extracted with anorganic solvent to isolate a compound or vice-versa. The specialized piece of glassware that isemployed for these types of separations is called a separatory funnel. In this experiment a mixture of benzoic acid and naphthalene will be purified using liquid-liquidextraction, more specifically an acid-base extraction. Since both compounds are soluble inethyl acetate (an...
