Hello everyone,

I have this lab that I am working on and because of the COV-19 my college is now online. It is very hard to ask my professor questions and understand them. Is there anyone that could help me answer these questions please.

Suppose there was a bubble in the absorbance well when you collected data for the Beers Law Plot. This bubble blocked 5% of the light. How would your calibration be affected?

Also when doing the formation constant for the complex Ion FeSCN+2 why do we use the volume of SCN- added in the calculation to calculate that concentration of [FeSCN+2].

Solution :

1) Absorbance is the amout of light that is blocked by sample molecules while, transmittance is the amout of light that passes through the solution. Blocking of light causes the solution to get darker because less light can get through. Thus, blocking of light results into the increase in absorbance and decrease in transmittance.

According to Beer 's calibration curve, the absorbance is linearly increases with concentration. Thus, due to blocking of light, absorbance becomes higher, which results into the deviation of curve from linear behavior.
