Definition: The chemical reaction which produces one mole of a substance from its constituent elements which are in their standard states is called a formation reaction. Note: The standard states mean that some of the elements exist as a diatomic molecule at normal room temperature.

1. The reaction of HCl and NaOH is not a proper formation reaction, because the substance is produced from two other compounds, not its elements.

2. The reaction of 2Mg and O2 is not a formation reaction because the two moles of MgO is formed.

3. The reaction of CaO and H2O is also not the case of formation reaction because of one mole of Ca(OH)2 is formed from two other compounds, not its elements.

4. The reaction of S and 3F2 is the perfect example of formation reaction because in this case one mole of an SF6 is produced from its elements in their standard states.
